Another great day today. I just took this picture from my balcony. It was the perfect end. My boys are sleeping and I got a peaceful moment in our temporary home to watch some awesome fireworks set off at sunset beach. If I had a tripod....this picture would have been bangin', but alas I do not. Even if I did, it wouldn't be here with me so I guess it's a moot point.
It started out with a trip to base. We were going to get groceries but we were early so we went to the BX (mall type thing). The firefighters were collecting money for the special olympics and Thomas was happy to contribute.
While in the BX Thomas had a meltdown of epic proportions so we took him home to nap, while Josh went to finalize our lease. YAY! When he woke up we headed to Camp Courtney's bowling alley. Our sponsor's son was turning 4 and they invited us out. It was Thomas' first bowling experience and he loved it. He doesn't quite understand waiting his turn. That's to be expected I guess.
By the way, I beat Josh by a few points. Vindicated for the kimono pajama denial yesterday.
This is going to be a rambly blog. But I had a rambly day. Who names a car naked? We also saw one called that's. Literally. That's. What do you think they were meaning to name it?
This is a picture of base housing. When we drove past this I thought to myself, "Thank God that's full! No wonder they had to make it mandatory, who would want to live in that?"
After the bowling alley we went back to the American Village. I had discovered that there were two Doctor Fish locations there and I found this one pretty easily. It's just like a little kiosk among all the shops. Everyone stared at me. At least until three young American men joined me and then people looked at them instead. Those three young men also had nasty feet and stole all my fish. I'm going to take that as a compliment.
This was 500 yen for 10 minutes. The second your feet hit the water the little fish swarm your feet like they haven't eaten in years. I thought it would tickle but it felt more like when your foot is waking up from being asleep. I can attest that they do indeed eat the dead skin as all of my flip flop calluses were much softer after the ten minutes.
Now in between the bowling and the fish eating my feet we had worked up an appetite and walked past a restaurant that had pictures of all of their menu items. Very helpful for us who don't know how to read Japanese characters. The owner was at the door and very welcoming. He showed us to an English menu and we decided to head on in. We ordered the couple's set for 2000 yen. It was a three course deal. It started with Yakisoba, which is an Okinawan specialty. Chicago has Portillo's, Okinawa has soba. It was good. Sort of bbq'ish, but not really. Hard to describe.
The second round was some sort of egg dish. I don't remember the name. There was pork and some dough inside the egg with worcestershire and some random white sauce on top. This was very tasty too.
Thomas inhaled the egg dish.
Third was the Japanese pancakes. I think I'll stick to Ihop. There was some veggie in here that I have never had, It was bitter. Blech.
With our bellies full we headed out walking and stumbled on some sort of festival. Complete with games and food on sticks! Thomas played one of those pick up the duck games and he picked out a water gun. He immediately began pointing it at people and saying boom boom. I'm not a big fan of that behavior. I may be a mean mommy and throw that gun away while he sleeps tonight.
We also opted for the ferris wheel. It wasn't cheap, and we probably won't do it again but the view was pretty and it was nice to rest our feet for a few minutes.
I really have no idea what we were celebrating but there were so many people in kimonos. The babies all dressed up in such elaborate outfits!!!!! Oh my I want to adopt a little Okinawan now, lol. This nice mom let us take a picture of her and her little girl. Aren't they cute?
The teenagers though....they get funky with their outfits. This girl probably is still making fun of me for asking to take her picture.
I don't feel so bad though because for all the staring I did at the outfits, there was plenty of staring back at Thomas. They really love him over here.
We're probably going to have a more relaxed day tomorrow. Just some grocery shopping and relaxing at the park here at the hotel. We move into our apartment next week! Very exciting.
Angel, it sounds like you are having a great time! I'm really enjoying your blog. I've been checking every day :) I wish it had a 'like' button like FB, LOL!
